COUNCILLORS are set to back a study which does not propose any major changes to the way views of Oxford’s famous skyline are protected from developers.

Oxford City Council officers have recommended councillors support the conclusions of the study, which was carried out earlier this year by the council and Oxford Preservation Trust, at a meeting of the west area planning committee tonight.

The study does not propose any major changes to the ‘view cones’ policy which means the city’s iconic dreaming spires must be visible from 10 viewpoints including across the north eastern hills and from Rose Hill.

The report stated that other views which should be protected may be identified and analysed in the future but did not propose any immediate changes or additions to the existing 10.

The protected views inform planning policy and mean tall buildings should not be built in a way which obscures people’s views from those 10 locations.

A public consultation on the study ran until July 25 but there were no major changes made based on the responses received.

A suggestion to protect more views than the existing 10 is to be considered for a second stage project to gather information about other views that are valued locally.
