AN ABINGDON grandfather has called for the town’s jubilee statue of Queen Victoria to be brought back to the Market Place 125 years after it was unveiled.
Mike Gould, 63, says the move would be a great way of celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in June.
The stone statue was installed to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887 but was moved to Abbey Gardens during the Second World War to make way for emergency water tanks.
Mr Gould said: “You go into town and see the massive nothingness in the Market Place. You think wouldn’t it be nice to have her there? Why not move her back to where she belongs?”
Abingdon Town Council member Monica Lovatt said the move was first suggested back in 1993, but it would have cost £10,000 and the soft stone was likely to have collapsed if moved. She also said there were concerns about graffiti and vandalism.
