OXVOX, the independent supporters' trust of Oxford United, have successfully listed the Kassam Stadium as a community asset after their bid was approved by Oxford City Council.
It means OXVOX have to be notified of any bid for the stadium and will have six months to put together a competing offer.
This is the first of its kind under the Localism Act (2011) and supporters' groups at Manchester United and Liverpool have similar bids under consideration for Old Trafford and Anfield.
OxVOX chairman Mark Sennett said: "This is a significant day for the supporters of Oxford United and we are delighted with the council's decision.
"This means that United supporters will now never wake up one morning and read in the paper that the stadium has been sold with no recourse."
