With no racing, I have been enjoying fitness training in the sun and a spot of go-karting, which is another thing I do to keep sharp.

However, even though I have not been in action, there have been plenty of other talking points in the sport.

I was very happy to see our local team, Lotus F1, back on the podium at the German Grand Prix a fortnight ago, with Kimi Raikkonen so close to taking the win.

However, there was one incident that I am sure we will all remember – that of the cameraman, Paul Allen, being struck by Mark Webber’s flying right rear tyre, causing him to suffer a broken collarbone and two broken ribs.

However, with a rear tyre weighing around 20kg and flying at speed, Allen was lucky to not suffer with more severe injuries.

It was miscommunication from the Red Bull pit crew which resulted in Webber leaving his pit box with the wheel not securely tightened. The FIA have now taken action and banned all media from the pit lane, with cameramen allowed to film only from the pit wall.

It is a shame, because it produced great shots of pit stops and really added to the TV coverage. However, there will now be fewer people in the firing line if this type of incident happens again. This week I went to the F1 Young Driver Test with Lotus – and it was a great day.

It was also great to see Susie Wolff getting geared up to test the Williams F1 car.

Susie testing is, of course, great for females, like myself, trying to get a chance to take the step into the F1 world. One of the quickest drivers to take part is somebody I tested against recently and I was on his pace.

I do feel I am ready to have a chance . . . maybe next year it will be my turn!
