OXFORDSHIRE Best of Districts Under 11s began their tour of the south-west with victory over East Devon Under 10s by 82 runs at Exeter.

The East Devon side contained four county players, but Oxon’s bowlers made short work of dismissing them for just 88 as they chased the visitors’ 170-6.

Oxon had looked assured with the bat, as James Coombs top-scored with an unbeaten 53 after impressive earlier knocks from Luke Higgins, Josh Brookes and George Burton.

Oli Oxby and George Gompertz took two wickets each as East Devon collapsed, with their final five wickets yielding just three runs between them.

Despite a determined effort with the ball, Oxfordshire then fell to a 91-run defeat against a strong Cornwall side at Wadebridge.

Oxon did well to restrict Cornwall to a total of 136-4 from their 40 overs after a strong second-wicket pairing of 69 from Charlie Kent and Jack McKenzie.

But it all went wrong for the tourists in reply, as the wickets tumbled to leave them struggling on 6-3 in the early stages of their innings. And after Rory Smith was adjudged lbw on 18, Oxfordshire folded.

A series of cheap dismissals followed as they limped to a poor total of 45 in just 19.2 overs.

Oxfordshire completed their tour the following day with a close defeat to Bristol by 18 runs at Failand & Portbury.

In a familiar story, Oxon performed well to dismiss their opponents for 127 in 29.5 overs, Kane Durrant taking 3-23, but surrendered the initiative with the bat in reply.

Their innings started disastrously, after Henry Andrews bowled opener Isaac Brennan with just a single run on the board.

Oxon were in trouble at 25-5 but an impressive partnership of 51 from George Burton and James Coombs added some respectability to the scoreline.

However, the tourists fell short on 109-7 from their 30 overs.
