NATIONAL 2 SOUTH

WILL Millett shone as Chinnor made it four straight wins with a 27-15 home success against Redruth.

The fly half scored two tries and kicked ten points to keep Chinnor in second place, just a point behind Clifton, who also have a 100 per cent record.

Clifton held on to beat Bishop’s Stortford 21-19. Had they been overhauled, Chinnor would have gone top of the table.

The Thame-based side still need to improve their concentration, but their excellent start bodes well after a turbulent summer that saw head coach Craig Chalmers quit without taking charge of a match.

Early home pressure was rewarded with a penalty from Millett on five minutes.

Then a storming 30-metre run from prop Andy Berry allowed Millett to touch down under the posts and convert.

Redruth started to gain some dominance and replied with a penalty from fly half Murray Westren.

Millett’s second penalty made it 13-3 on 26 minutes.

The hosts’ next try came from a scintillating run from wing Tristan Corpe.

He took the ball 30 metres from the line, chipped over the opposition and caught the ball before touching down for Millett to convert.

As the first half drew to a close, Chinnor lost concentration and were like rabbits in the headlights as wing Luke Jones kicked through to score under the posts, Westren converting for 20-10.

Playing with the wind in the second half, Chinnor gave their supporters every expectation of further tries.

However, Redruth had other ideas.

The visitors were camped in the Chinnor 22 and eventually the pressure paid off with a rolling maul as prop Darren Jacques touched down after 55 minutes.

A period of attritional rugby followed as both sets of forwards slugged it out in the middle of the field.

Eventually, Chinnor broke the deadlock after 68 minutes with a 70-metre solo run by Millett to touch down in the corner, with centre Matt Goode converting.
