OXFORD City Stars’ sensational start to the season shows no sign of stopping after an 8-3 home victory over Wightlink Tigers made it four straight wins.

A bad-tempered English National League clash saw 75 minutes of penalties handed out.

But Stars will not care as they march on at the top of the South Division 2 table.

Josh Florey and Alan Green netted two goals apiece, with Mason Wild, Joe Oliver, Mike Whillock and Nick Oliver also on target.

Green put Stars ahead early on, only for Joseph Denness to make it 1-1 following a breakaway.

Against the run of play, Florey then converted a pass from Mike Whillock.

Whillock made it 3-1 with a superb effort after a bullet pass from Florey, which was easily the goal of the night and an early contender for the season’s best.

Stars asserted their authority at the start of the second period when Joe Oliver made it 4-1, and when Nick Oliver scored on the powerplay, it was nearly game over.

Tigers threatened and pulled one back through Lewis Tribble, but Florey made it 6-2.

After this, the talking points were all penalties.

Stars faced a three-on-five situation when James Clarke and Ricky Young picked up penalties within 13 seconds of each other.

Then, half a minute later, Andy Cox was ejected for slashing, earning a major penalty in the process, although Stars managed to see outthe penalty kill, which lasted for more than six minutes.

After the game had calmed down, it all kicked off again when, with nine minutes to go, both sides picked up penalties – Josh Oliver and Whillock in the dock for Stars.

Jordan Ricketts made it 6-3, but late goals from man-of-the-match Wild and Green sealed an emphatic win and sets Stars up for this week’s clash at Haringey Racers, who have won two out of two.
