SOUTH WEST 1 EAST

RELEGATION may just prove a blessing in disguise for Oxford Harlequins, according to head of rugby Steve Chadbone.

Quins dropped out of National 3 South West after winning just three times in the whole of last season.

But having won four from four in South West 1 East, Chadbone says the club are on the up in more ways than one.

“With the fact that last season was disastrous, in some ways it has forced a fair amount of reflection behind the scenes,” he said.

“Every successful side generally has got a successful committee. You can’t just have one or two people doing the whole thing.

“Now we are certainly a team rather than just individuals. Relegation has probably brought us that.

“When all is said and done, it could be the springboard to better things in the next two, three or four seasons.”

Chadbone added: “People got a little bit lazy with their own roles before, but more are proactive now.”

Quins strengthened their squad considerably over the summer, with many of their newcomers, such as fly half Zac Norris and No 8 Jackson Achilles, making a big impact.

“With the recruitment that has been done since the tail end of last season, we are looking good,” said Chadbone.

“Keni Fisilau has fitted in very well as player-coach and it is refreshing to be able to start the season the way we want to start.

“Myself, Tony Edney and Jamie Cope have had to pick up the pieces when things have gone wrong, but not had a fair crack of the whip.”

Quins host fellow unbeaten side, leaders Swindon, on Saturday, in what should best their toughest test yet.

While securing promotion back to National 3 South West is their main aim, Quins have a longer term focus.

“What was pleasing for us is that we gave Chinnor a close game in pre-season and now we see how well they are doing in their league,” said Chadbone.

“We’re building for next year, but we have got to get through this year. It is not going to be easy to win promotion.”
