Chipping Norton driver Alice Powell last night paid tribute to Maria De Villota after her shock death.

Former test driver De Villota, on a tour promoting her autobiography ‘Life Is A Gift’, was found dead in a hotel room in Seville yesterday. She was 33.

A spokeswoman for the Seville police has indicated De Villota’s death was via natural causes – with the suspicion she suffered a heart attack – although added they could not yet provide confirmation.

“It is such sad news to hear the passing of Maria De Villota,” Powell said.

“She was a lovely lady and very supportive of my racing.

“I would sometimes receive Tweets or Facebook messages from her congratulating me or wishing me luck.

“She will be missed greatly and my thoughts are with her family.

“Rest in peace Maria.”
