Burnell refuses to get carried away despite London Welsh's thumping win + Video

The Oxford Times: Ben West was praised by London Welsh coach Justin Burnell Ben West was praised by London Welsh coach Justin Burnell

LONDON Welsh head coach Justin Burnell said yesterday’s 47-16 home hammering of Rotherham Titans counted for nothing yet, writes ED MEZZETTI.

The Exiles stormed back to the top of the Greene King IPA Championship table with a seven-try demolition of the morning leaders at the Kassam Stadium that gave them maximum points.

Burnell said: “I am elated that we scored seven tries because Rotherham were top of the league and are a good side.

“We have done the double over them and that’s a big thing, but it counts for nothing until you are in the top four.”

Burnell agreed this was his side’s best performance of the season, which had come after arguably their worst display of the campaign a week earlier.

“Last week’s performance at Plymouth gave us that kick up the rear which we deserved,” the head coach said.

“It allowed us to be totally honest with ourselves with the respect of how good we are.

“What we did today was just go out and play with that direction and width that we have always got.”

“The biggest thing for me was the two young men coming into a massive game, Will Robinson and Ben West. I just thought they really took their opportunities.”
