CRICKET: Trott misses out in The Parks
9:30am Wednesday 9th April 2014 in Sport
Jonathan Trott’s woes continued in The Parks yesterday when he could make only eight on the second day against Oxford MCCU.
Trott, hoping to return for England this summer after leaving last winter’s Ashes whitewash early with a stress-related illness, lasted only 22 balls for Warwickshire in his first appearance since then in first-class cricket.
He at least doubled his output from the friendly against Gloucester at Edgbaston, but after rain wiped out the first day of three, the No 3 had to watch a 170-run opening stand before he had his chance.
It was to no avail as he fell to seamer Sam Weller, a teenager playing in only his second first-class fixture.
An attempted pull brought his downfall as he was caught at fine leg by Johny Marsden.
Most of the other other top-order Bears batsmen made hay, openers Varun Chopra and Laurie Evans leading the way.
Evans fell two short of a century, while Ateez Javid and former Cambridge University batsman Paul Best helped themselves to half-centuries as Warwickshire finished the day on a commanding 388-7 off 103 overs.
Weller was the pick of the student bowlers with 3-66, while James Poulson picked up two wickets.
