JOSH Murphy has revealed his bow and arrow goal celebration is a salute to his young son.

The 29-year-old winger unveiled the celebration for his recent strikes at home to Cheltenham Town and at Port Vale yesterday.

And Murphy has now disclosed the meaning behind the bow and arrow celebration is a reference to his son Aaro.

He said: “My son’s name is Aaro, so for the last couple, I’ve tried to get the bow and arrow in for him.

“Having a kid changes you and makes you grow up. You stop thinking about yourself so much, so it’s been a great blessing having him, and I feel like my football’s showing that.”

Murphy’s strike against the Valiants saw him collect a short corner from Cameron Brannagan, work himself a yard of space, and send a curled effort beyond the reach of Connor Ripley for his fourth goal in eight games.

Murphy said: “I told him at the next corner to pass to me because I wanted to have a shot at goal. There were a couple of times in pre-season where we worked on a short corner to me, and I’d either scored or assisted from it.

“We haven’t tried it as much recently, and I just told him to give it to me. I kept getting past them so what’s the worst that could happen?

“He’s given it to me and I’ve scored, so maybe it was a bit off the cuff, but so be it.

“I was shooting for goal, knowing that if it got a deflection, it might’ve gone in. It was a cross-cum-shot but I was delighted it went in.”

On the win against Vale, Murphy said: “It’s a massive victory. Everyone knows that Tuesday wasn’t acceptable and way below the standards that are required at Oxford United.

“We’ve come here, and it was always going to be a scrappy sort of game, but we controlled it from start to finish, and came away with the three points.

“Goals change games, and we came in at half-time after being so dominant. We said that we needed to put our chances away and kill the game.

“We got the goal early in the second half, and that took the sting out of them. We’re happy with the result, and now it’s about backing that up after the international week.

“At the end of the day, we needed the win, and 2-0, we’ll take that, and now it’s about backing it up after the international break.”
