A superb defensive display saw Chinnor secure a shock 20-13 victory at home to second-placed Ealing in National 3 South.

Ealing went into the match as the division’s top scorers, but Chinnor, buoyed by their win at Dings Crusaders, restricted them to one try.

The visitors started with the breeze at their backs, which meant that Chinnor needed to keep the ball in hand through a pick-up and drive approach.

Ealing were intent on using their scrum, twice opting for the set piece from penalties.

The second of these, in the 12th minute, proved to be productive, when ex Wasps Academy No.8 Mark Lock picked up and drove for the Chinnor line.

Although he was held up just short, Ealing recycled the ball, allowing fly half Benjamin Ward to go over near the posts.

Full back Peter Hodgkinson converted and added a penalty for 10-0 five minutes later.

Chinnor rallied with a fine try from wing Chris Mahony.

Full back Ben Hewitt created the space for Mahony, who outpaced the defence and wrong-footed Hodgkinson for fly half James Cathcart to convert.

Trailing 10-7, Chinnor made a great start to the second half when No 8 Peter Wright forced his way over following a scrum.

Cathcart converted and added a penalty.

Ealing laid siege to their opponents, but could manage only a Hodgkinson penalty on 71 minutes.

A rare attack led to Cathcart slotting a second penalty from 45 metres, but they still had to withstand huge amounts of pressure and a yellow card for Mahony.

Henley Hawks broke their duck for 2009 with a 42-19 demolition of Havant, which saw them score six tries and collect four yellow cards.

Referee Nigel Higginson also binned two Havant players, and seeemed unable to award a penalty in the final quarter without a card.

Hawks scored from their first attack with skipper Matt Payne and centre Neil Baggett setting up wing Sam Portland, Danny Wells converting.

Havant’s Giant lock Rob Matthews was sin-binned before Payne off-loaded for flanker Stean Williams to score the first of a try brace.

Centre Wells converted this and try No 3 from the lively No 8 Payne, who was set up by hooker Simon Tattersall.

Full back Pete Davies could not find wing Jack Shaylor with a scoring pass before Havant hit back.

Henley prop Alex Penny and Havant’s Tom Wells were both in the sin-bin when centre Greg Sullivan pierecd a stretched defence, with Keith Molyneux converting.

Portland’s run created a fourth try for Wells, who split the Havant centres to touch down and convert.

Payne was again the provider for try No 5 after the break, when he set up prop Hugo Milford-Scott.

Portland and flanker Alex Dupee were the main instigators of Hawks’ sixth score, finished by Williams and converted by fly half Charlie Hobart.

Payne, Williams and Davies were all yellow-carded in the closing stages, while Havant managed consolation tries from Chris Thompson and Frazer Wilford, Molyneux converting one.
