Two cracking strikes saw North Leigh dispose of Hungerford Town 2-0 in a pulsating Zamaretto Southern League Division 1 South & West game at Eynsham Park last night.

The first came on 21 minutes when Matty Taylor’s ball found Andy McCabe, who netted with a crisp 20-yard volley.

Hungerford’s James Lewis was denied by the post five minutes later.

Home keeper Sam Worrell and opposite number Mark Scott were both called upon to make some outstanding saves in a riveting second half.

The clinching goal came after 68 minutes after another fine save from Scott, which resulted in a corner.

From the flag kick, McCabe’s effort was blocked as far as Andrew Helby on the edge of the area, and his low drive found the net through a ruck of players.

Abingdon United were unlucky to come away from Division 1 South & West high-fliers AFC Totton with nothing to show for their efforts after a 2-1 defeat.

The visitors went a goal down on seven minutes when Nathan Jack cut through the middle to score.

It could easily have been all square at the break, but United had two efforts cleared off the line and a strong penalty appeal turned down.

Totton went further ahead in the second half through Nathaniel Sherborne, who looked yards offside.

John Mills netted a consolation for Abingdon in the final minute.
