Former Wasps, Harlequins and Chinnor flanker Paul Volley will captain the Major Stanley’s XV to face Oxford University at Iffley Road next Wednesday.

Volley, who is now with London Scottish, came through Chinnor’s junior ranks before embarking on a professional career that also took in French outfit Castres.

He leads a select side set to include Bath and Saracens players, plus a number of former Blues.

Oxford University director of rugby Steve Hill said: “Paul is a well-known local player and should provide extra interest.

“Bath and Saracens ha-ve said they will give us several players, but we will have to wait until after the wee-kend’s matches to see exactly who.

“Stanley’s will also include Martin Nutt and Andy Boyle, of Oxford Harlequins, who are both impressive players.”

The Stanley’s game is traditionally Oxford’s best-attended fixture ahead of the Varsity Match at Twickenham and is one of only three remaining “warm-up clashes” for the Dark Blues before their Twickenham date on December 10.

Competition should be less fierce than this week’s 31-31 draw with a young Sale Sharks side, which for a long time looked like being a significant home win.

Reflecting on the match, Hill said: “We were more precise and had a few more opportunities than last week.

“They came back and showed they are a Premiership side, but we conceded too many penalties, which gave them field position, and missed a couple of crucial tackles.

“At half-time, we made it very clear that they would be strong.

“In the second half, we made too many basic errors.

“We got some good positions to win it in the last five or six minutes, but it was frustrating to have let them back in.”

Hill added that his side need to be more consistent in defence after often gifting Sale space to play.

“We worked really hard when we had the ball, but we must work harder when they have it,” said Hill.
