Wallingford paid the price for fielding a weakened side against Witney in the Oxfordshire Cup, crashing to a 79-0 home defeat.

The visitors dominated of all phases of play in the first-round tie and the tries flowed.

Lewis Collins led the way with five, James Monks helped himself to a hat-trick and there were singles for Will Worrall, Will Bibby, Carl Strutt and Tim Muller.

Henry Lamb landed five conversions and two penalties, while Pierre Dubost added a drop goal.

Grove cruised into the second round with an emphatic 52-12 victory over Chipping Norton.

The visitors started as they meant to go on, scoring two tries inside the first five minutes through Guy Nicholl and Chris Clare, both converted by Roger Sevier.

Chippy were just wide with a penalty attempt, but Grove cashed in when a home player was yellow-carded and Jon Chapman went over for Roger Sevier to convert.

A try from a five-metre scrum got Chippy off the mark, but were Grove dominant up front and for the remainder of the half, the referee ordered passive scrummaging for the sake of player safety.

After the break, further tries followed from Nick Sevier, brother Roger Sevier, Nicholl and Harry Carr (2), Roger Sevier adding four conversions, while Chippy replied with a solitary converted try.

Oxford University Greyhounds marked their return to the county cup after a gap of more than 15 years by winning 36-8 at Banbury.

The students hit their stride early, with some attacking rugby leading to an early try for Tom Yusef.

Second row Jamie Durwood, returning from a fractured skull in the first match of the season, reigned supreme in the line-out, ensuring a good supply of ball for the Hounds’ backs.

Man-of-the-match Andy Sprague added a second try, converted by Jez Mather and a third followed from flanker Sam Bennett, which Mather again converted.

The Hounds continued to pile on the pressure, and from a kick ahead, Huw Williams gathered and beat four defenders on his way to the posts. Mather added the extra points.

On the stroke of half-time, Banbury got points on the boards via a Mike Smith penalty to pull it back to 26-3 at the break.

The home side came out in far more determined fashion in the second half and were soon rewarded with a try from Dave Taylor.

However, any thoughts of a revival were soon doused when centre Yusef added his second try, and with the last play of the game, replacement fly-half Tom Mills rounded off a fine move to complete the scoring.
