Hazy Tom retained his unbeaten record for Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon by making it four wins from as many starts under National Hunt Rules with a stylish success at Wetherby yesterday.

Making most of the running under Richard Johnson in the novices’ hurdle over an extended two miles, the five-year-old never came under serious pressure on his way to a 12-length victory over Sea of Thunder.

Longsdon, who has made no secret of the high regard in which holds Hazy Tom, was not present to see the gelding add his second hurdle win to two in National Hunt Flat Races.

ButJohnson was impressed, after the 6-4 favourite had given weight to all but the runner-up, and expects an inevit-able rise in class soon for such a promising horse.

“Obviously, he’s improving,” he said.

“It’s nice that Charlie’s managed to find another stepping stone for him rather than taking on some of the big guys just yet.

“But I presume he’ll probably have to step up in grade next time.”

Paddy Power introduced Hazy Tom at 33-1 in the betting for both the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

ALAN Jarvis, who trains at Twyford, near Bicester, was among the winners at Kempton where Elegant Flight (7-1) landed a seven-furlong nursery by two lengths under Jim Crowley.
