Didcot Town manager Dave Mudge has hailed the capture of former Newcastle United striker Paul Robinson from Chesham United.

But Robinson, 33, will have to wait for his debut as he is cup-tied for Saturday's FA Carlsberg Trophy third-qualifying-round trip to Blue Square Bet South side Bromley.

Born in Sunderland, he started his career with Darlington, before joining Newcastle in March 1998.

He made his Magpies debut in August 1999 in a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa.

Robinson was famously selected by manager Ruud Gullit ahead of Alan Shearer in a 2–1 home defeat by Sunderland which saw Gullit sacked.

In 2000, Robinson joined Championship side Wimbledon for £1.5m.

He then had spells as a host of professional and non-league clubs before he signed for Premier Division Chesham.

“There’s not many clubs at our level that have £1.5m players, apart from probably Steve Claridge,” said Mudge.

“He’s a big, strong target man who holds the ball up well and has a lot of experience.

“To get someone of his calibre is fantastic for this club.

“I know him from when I was manager at Windsor & Eton.”

Meanwhile, Didcot are without Victor Asombang (groin), Danny Seaward (back), Tom Mudge (ankle) and Lee Henderson (hip).

Didcot lost 4-0 to Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West highfliers Sholing in midweek, but Mudge said: “It was just one of those games that knocks you sideways.

“We have been playing well in recent weeks. We hit the woodwork four times and then they score two worldys.

“Anyone watching from Bromley would have learnt absolutely nothing!”

Mudge said his side would be giving the game a “right go”.

“We’re not going to be kamikaze about it, but we want to try to compete and hopefully have a bit of luck on the day.

“It’s an ideal bounce-back game.

“There’s no points at stake so we can go and enjoy it.”

Banbury United will be without Stefan Bailey for their home tie with Wealdstone after the former Oxford United midfielder joined Arlesey.

Boss Ady Fuller said: “It’s not ideal just before a big game like Wealdstone. I wasn’t surprised he went because it’s his neck of the woods.

“But we have got other peolple that will just have to step in.”

Fuller says the visit of the Ryman League Premier Divisioon side will be a big challenge.

He added: “They have got an experienced manager there (Gordon Bartlett).

“He knows the game and we have to make sure we are at it.

“They have also got some experienced players, so it’s going to be our hardest game of the season.

“It gets tough when it gets to this stage of the competition.

“We need to get off to a fast start and defend well as a unit. We have a good enough strikeforce.”

Banbury welcome back Ollie Stanbridge from suspension, but defender Martin Hutchcox (foot injury) is ruled out.
