Oxford City Stars picked up a much-needed English National League South Division 1 point in a 2-2 draw at home to Bristol Pitbulls after an 11-0 battering the previous night at Cardiff Devils.

Nothing went right for Stars from the opening drop of the puck against Cardiff as they shipped four goals in the first period through Jamie Hayes, Robert Setlak, Stephen Deacon and Luke Piggott.

Hayes completed his hat-trick in the second period when Piggott took his tally to four, while Jordan Powell also netted.

Devils eased off in the final period, scoring just once through Chris Jones.

Despite the thrashing, a crowd of more than 350 packed into Oxford Ice Rink for the clash with Bristol, and they saw Martin Lee open the scoring for Stars following a great pass from Josh Oliver.

Oxford incurred a minor penalty for holding shortly after, and Jamie Newton capitalised by levelling for Pitbulls.

Bristol’s Swedish import, Henrik Sahlin, then slashed Richard Wojciak in the chest, which sparked a melee, with Stars captain Darren Elliott and Bristol player-owner Richie Hargraves given two-minute penalties.

Gareth Endicott fired home a rebound at the start of the second period to restore Oxford’s lead, but Mike Smith levelled for Bristol.
