Liam Davis says that there has always been belief in the Oxford United camp, but the victory against Northampton boosts it.

The former Northampton man got the nod to come back into the U’s side after suspension and played his part in Saturday's 2-0 win.

And the left back believes United can now kick on.

“Getting any victory is sweet, but against your old club is good as well,” he said.

“Being suspended last week and coming back in means that it has been a positive return for me.”

He added: “The belief was always there, but we didn’t get the rub of the green.

“We had a bad four weeks where we lost players through injury and it upset the flow of things a little bit.

“But you saw in spells today that they were finding our feet again.”

And what was Davis’s view on the penalty incident?

“It was great to have two strikers on the scoresheet and maybe Tommy could have had a second one, but the ball is still travelling across the car park I think,” he joked.

Asked who he thought would take the next one, he replied: “Me,I think I should.”

NORTHAMPTON boss Aidy Boothroyd said that he remained upbeat despite suffering his first defeat at the club, writes MARK EDWARDS.

Boothroyd, who started his tenure with a draw at home to Crewe last week, says that Saturday’s loss was down to individual mistakes.

“I thought we kept going and people were still working hard,” he said.

“But we are the ones that are putting ourselves in the brown stuff and making mistakes. We can blame referees, opposition, whatever, but it’s down to us.

“We can’t come to sides like this and give away goals which is what we have done today.

“We haven’t been done by two wonder goals, but have conceded goals because we were mentally on the back foot and you can’t be that.”
