Oxford Harlequins edged out of the relegation zone after a hard-fought 15-10 victory at basement boys Newbury Blues.

Quins took the lead with a penalty from fly half Tom Jelley and created enough chances to wrap up the game at half-time.

Centres Martin Nutt and Tevita Vaikona, on his debut, went close but Quins lost flanker Ramen Farahani with a serious arm injury.

Newbury took the lead when No 8 Tom Dyer burst over from the back of a scrum.

It was 10-3 after prop Tom Sanders went over.

Quins were level on 50 minutes when flanker Sione Vaiomo’unga, sent prop Matt Edney over in the corner, and Jelley converted.

The visitors’ winning try came on 71 minutes when scrum half Anthony Cope spotted a gap and fed Vaiomo’unga to touch down.
