OXFORDSHIRE cricket star Jack Brooks is hoping to break into England’s one-day side after being selected for the second-team tour to Bangladesh.

The 27-year-old North-ants paceman is in the England Lions squad to play in a five-match one-day series and two Twenty20s against Bangladesh A, leaving on New Year’s Day.

With England’s one-day fortunes fluctuating so greatly, former Tiddington and Oxford seamer Brooks says players like him can force their way into the set-up.

“People still make a lot of where I have come from,” he said. “I guess it is a good story.

“I’m enjoying the journey and hoping that this is not the end of it yet.

“I am now in the top ten fast bowlers in the country.

“I hope that I can force my way into the England set-up at some point.”

Brooks added: “The management have made it quite clear how disappointing England have been in World Cups.

“The main goal is to win the World Cup in 2015.

“A lot of young guys on the fringes will be given a chance to see how they perform at that level. It is a really exciting period.

“I hope to be at or around my peak at that time. I have got a few years to try and force myself into that team.

“It is certainly a lot easier to get into that side than the Test team at the moment.”

Brooks flew back from the England Performance Programme (EPP) training camp in South Africa on Monday and will spend Christmas at home in Tiddington.

His Lions call-up comes after a very promising season with Northants, which was cut short due to a back injury.

He said: “Getting selected was always something I was aiming for when I joined up with the EPP at Loughborough in October.

“My main target was just to bowl pain-free and get over my back injury.”

Brooks’s transformation from village cricketer with Tiddington to potential England bowler has certainly been impressive and now he hopes playing in the sub-continent will push him further forward.

“I have surprised myself at times (with my improvement),” he added. “I am not going to lie.

“I love playing and always throw myself into it. To be involved with England is fantastic.”
