Abingdon School reached rugby union's Daily Mail Under 18 Schools’ Cup quarter-finals for the first time with a convincing 28-3 home win over Truro School.

Victory in the sixth-round tie means they are now just two wins away from finals day at Twickenham on Wednesday, April 4.

Next up for Abingdon is a home tie against the winners of next Wednesday’s clash between Dulwich College and Hampton.

Having travelled up the night before, Truro, who reached the Daily Mail Under 15 Cup final last year, arrived full of confidence, having won 14 of their 16 fixtures this season.

After a shaky first five minutes, Abingdon took charge with second row Kristian Wood crossing the whitewash for the opening try.

Truro outside centre Ned Warne kicked a penalty to reduce the deficit.

Abingdon fly half Henry Sensecall kicked a drop goal, before man-of-the-match Tom Kynge, last year’s England Under 16 A captain, won a crucial turnover from a Truro lineout on the home five-metres line.

This filled the hosts with confidence, and some good running rugby saw inside centre Peter Allan go over for a try converted by Sensecall for a 15-3 half-time lead.

Sensecall increased Abingdon’s lead with a penalty from in front of the posts after one of the Truro forwards prevented scrum half Hamish Grant, from taking a quick penalty and was given his marching orders to the sin-bin.

Abingdon were now in the driving seat and with the visitors down to 14 men, Kynge finished off some excellent work by the backs by crossing in the corner.

Full back Peter Moore sealed a memorable victory by taking on the Truro right wing and running in a try from 30 metres.

MAGDALEN College School, Oxford, saw their run in the Daily Mail Under 18 Schools’ Vase come to an end with a 32-12 sixth-round defeat at Reading Blue Coat School.

Jordan Brodley and James Bennington scored tries for Magdalen, with Charlie Beeson kicking a conversion.
