OXFORD Harlequins have snapped up two new players to boost their relegation battle in National 3 South West.

Fly half Matt Smith and full back Frank Mayfield come straight in for tomorrow’s home clash with promotion-chasing Redingensians.

Quins are four points adrift of safety and manager Steve Chadbone hopes the duo will provide a timely boost.

He said: “Matt has come from Brisbane Brothers and is over here for a couple of seasons.

“There was a flyer going round about him and I snapped him up. We are looking forward to seeing him play – he had impressed in training.

“Frank is a former rugby league player and has just moved to Oxford.

“He only turned up at training last Thursday, but played for the seconds last week and did well.”

Luke Brown comes in at lock, with Michael Forde moving to blindside flanker to replace Julian Watkins, who is off travelling in New Zealand.

Player-coach Tevita Vaikona is still suffering from a knock, so Anthony Cope and Martin Nutt continue at centre.

Captain Simon Chadbone should be fit enough to return at loose-head prop in place of Sam Steventon.

Versatile back Mark Chase returns to the Chinnor squad after injury for their match at Old Patesians.

Wing Tom Gray misses out as he has a bug.

Head coach Jason Bowers said: “Old Pats is always a hard ground to go to. The pitch is very small and they are big and powerful up front.

“Hopefully, we will move the ball around and continue our winning run.”

Tight-head prop Jim Hadfield and lock Karl Outen return to the Henley Hawks side for their trip to National 2 South basement boys Westcombe Park.

Hadfield replaces Alex Penny (unavailable), while Andy Downing moves to blindside flanker, with Jamie Sutton missing out.

Back-row forward Matt Payne and centre Danny Wells return on the bench.

Tom Harper, Phil Gouldie, Matt Clarke, Lewis Collins, Gareth Campbell, Charlie Bennett and Sam Collins come into the Witney squad travelling to Swanage & Wareham in South West 1 East.

Witney will be keen to put last week’s 38-0 home defeat to Salisbury behind them.
