James Constable was already an Oxford United legend.

His crucial goals, his rapport with the fans and his love of the club have never been in question.

But turning down a move to Swindon means that his already-lofty status among U’s supporters last night leaped to a whole new level.

He did not just turn down a move to the County Ground – he didn’t even speak to them.

It’s important to put into context what a monumental decision Constable has made.

He was, reportedly, going to be offered the opportunity to double his wages – something that any of you and I would jump at the chance to do.

The most ardent fan would not begrudge the United No 9 the opportunity to take that sort of offer from another club after the service he has given the U’s for the past four years.

However, the big issue here was that the club offering him the chance to do that was Swindon – the arch rivals from down the A420, whose manager had done all he could to unsettle Constable over the course of the season.

Had he moved, would all his achievements with United over the past four years be tarnished in the eyes of the fans?

The club were right to accept a very good bid for one of their players.

Everyone has their price, and if a valuation is met, it is down to the player to make the final decision.

I am sure Constable would be the first to admit that he has endured a frustrating season in front of goal, but he is still United’s top-scorer – albeit with far fewer than he should have.

It may be that there are more offers made for him during the transfer window and if the move is right, he could well go to pastures new.

If that proves the case, then the best of luck to him.

But that’s the end of it all from Swindon’s point of view.

As one fan put it last night: “I would never begrudge James Constable leaving Oxford United after the service he has provided us over the past years.

“He can go to Accrington Stanley, Hereford, Bournemouth, whoever he wants if he feels the move is right for him. Just not Swindon.”

What’s the betting he gets a goal tomorrow...
