Liam Davis said he had no hesistation in signing an extension to his contract when it was offered to him by Oxford United.

The new deal will keep the 25-year-old at the club until the summer of 2013 with an option of a further year beyond that.

The left back joined United in the summer after impressing pre-season following his release by Northampton Town.

“I just bought into what the gaffer and chairman’s vision was of the club and obviously since I’ve been here I have enjoyed my time,” said Davis.

“It’s been a very good experience for me so far.

“It wasn’t really a trial I was on here – the gaffer expressed that he wanted me to sign, so he probably wanted to see my fitness levels and stuff.

“And after the game (against Everton) he showed me what he wanted me to do for the club.

“So it was less of a trial, because I think he knew what I could do.”

United manager Chris Wilder said: “He’s another from a whole host of players we’ve taken from other clubs who we have identified can be an asset to us.

“The boy’s worked hard and had a real good first part of the season. I think the work we have done with him has made him a better player.

“I’m glad that he’s here for the foreseeable future because he’s certainly a player that’s still got a lot left in the locker to improve on, but shows really good signs and potential to play at a higher level.”

Meanwhile, Davis said he was keen to add to the two goals he has scored this season, including the cracking strike in the 2-0 win against tomorrow’s opponents Barnet at Underhill.

He added: “I scored a couple of goals early on in the season and haven’t got any recently, so I would like to get a few more.

“But the job is changing, you have to worry about clean sheets rather than goals and let the attackers get the goals.”

Davis said it was important that the U’s, who moved back into the play-off zone with a 1-1 draw at Burton on Sunday, got back to winning ways.

“There is a bit of a gap (to sixth-placed Torquay), but we’re still confident we can climb some places once we get the win,” said Davis.

“And once we do that we feel we can put some more wins together.

“The performances have been good and we now need to turn those into wins.

“It’s 18 games to go and a lot can happen in 18 games.

“I don’t expect the teams above us to maintain their form.

“As long as we can keep getting points – whether it’s one point or three – we can do well this season.”
