HANNAH England collected her first UK indoor title when winning the 3,000m in Sheffield yesterday.

The Oxford City athlete was competing at a different distance to normal in the Aviva Indoor UK Trials and Championships.

But England showed her class to land her third UK crown – the others both coming outdoors in her favoured 1,500m.

In a slowly run race, the World Championship 1,500m silver medallist took up the running with just under a lap to go and held onto the lead to record a time of 9mins 6.04secs.

Katrina Wootton, of Bedford, was second in 9.6.99 and South London’s Elle Baker third.

England was delighted with her success, but has already decided not to seek selection for the World Indoor Championships.

“I wanted to make sure I stayed with the pace and sprint at the end– and fortunately I managed to,” she said.

“I didn’t know how fast the girls would make the race, but I felt comfortable. The first few laps were tactical, but it was good.

“I’ve never actually won a national title indoors, so it was a big target of mine to win.

“Maybe I made it tougher for myself by running the 3,000m, but it was fun.”

England, though, is expecting things to be much tougher next Saturday, when she reverts back to the 1,500m in the third Aviva meeting in Birmingham.

“My strength training is where it needs to be,” she added. “I felt great and I could have run a bit faster if I needed to.

“I am looking forward to the 1,500 at Birmingham, where, I gather, there will be a strong field.”

Former Radley Ladies athlete Carolyn Plateau, now competing for Loughborough, came fifth in the 800m, recording a time of 2.07.59.

Jessica Ennis equalled her personal best to win the 60m hurdles, Holly Bleasdale took the pole vault title while Dwain Chambers recorded his fifth UK indoor victory in the men’s 60m.
