OXFORD Stadium escaped losing a fourth successive BAGS meeting as conditions eased sufficiently for yesterday’s meeting to go ahead, writes John Gaisford.

With the previous three BAGS fixtures having fallen victim to the big freeze, it means management at Cowley are now some £24,000 out of pocket.

Saturday’s meeting was the latest cancellation after temperatures of around -13 degrees on Thursday night left the track frozen solid despite tons of salt being applied before the recent cold spell.

Racing manager Gary Baiden called the fixture off after a lunchtime inspection, while last Thursday’s meeting lasted only five races before the plug was pulled during the heavy snow.

Friday’s BAGS meeting was called off after the stadium vets decided that the greyhounds would not be safe as the track was too heavy.

It means that since February 4, Oxford have lost three full meetings and missed out on ten races in the curtailed meetings.
