Oxfordshire captain Annie Gowing scored a hole-in-one on her way to a matchplay win at the Senior Women’s English Close Amateur Championship at Tidworth Garrison.
The Frilford Heath member, who was playing in the second flight, made short work of the 168-yard par three 11th hole, where she used her 24-degree rescue club to play through the wind.
“It was a wonderful shot,” laughed Gowing, who admitted to a degree of local knowledge. “I used to play for Wiltshire and I do know this course quite well,” she said.
She started her golf at Wrag Barn, Swindon, and played for the county before moving to Oxfordshire.
This was her second hole-in-one, having previously scored one at Frilford, also on the 11th hole on the Red Course.
On this occasion, the ace helped her to beat Burhill’s Debbie Richards 6 & 5 and move into the quarter-finals of the second flight.
Gowing’s run ended there when she was beaten 4 & 3 by Karen Lobb (Northamptonshire County).
The title was won by Christine Watson, from Beaconsfield, who beat Cheshire’s Barbara Laird 4 & 2 in the final.
