GREAT & Little Tew skipper Andy Harris says there is no reason why his side can’t reach Lord’s in the Yorkshire Tea Village Cup after Sunday’s thrilling six-run win at Oxford Downs in the Oxfordshire final.

After Tew had posted 200-6 from their 40 overs, Downs got off to a steady start in reply, but some excellent catching and a great display in the field upped the run rate and saw Darryl Woods’ side fall short of the victory.

Tew now face a trip to the winners of Sunday’s Gloucestershire final between Apperley or Corse & Staunton on July 1 which was rained off last weekend.

The last time Tew got to this stage of the competition, in 1985, they lost to another Glou-cestershire side, Frocester.

But Harris, who was not even born then, wants his side to go further this time around.

“The target has to be Lord’s,” said Harris, who is in his second season as captain.

“There is no point in going into the compeitition if that is not your aim.

“We want to go as far as we can and I believe we have the ability to go all the way.

“We definitely have the ability to be in the final at Lord’s in September.

“We’ll need a bit of luck and the right weather on the way.”

Harris put this season’s form down to some superb application from his players.

He added: “Last season, we were a young, naive side and it was very much a learning curve.

“I think we lost five of our first six games, but we turned it round.

“We managed to keep the players from last year and didn’t add any extra signings and there has been a dramatic improvement.

“We know how to work out teams and it’s all good.

“The players we have here have so much enthusiasm and a never-say-die attitude.”

Harris admitted that watching Downs in the previous round had paid off.

He said: “It was a very close game – a real nail-biter on Sunday.

“It ebbed and flowed all the way through.

“But we had a game plan and the players did fantastically well to stick to it.

“We watched Downs in their last game and thought there were a few areas of their game that Cumnor did not monopolise on.

“We don’t know anything at all about either Apperley or Corse & Staunton, but we’ve got the opportunity to go down to Gloucestershire on Sunday, so we can do a bit of research on them.

“We’re all looking forward to it and it’s all part of growing the side.

“We want to reach that final at Lord’s in September.”
