GERALD Busby, a stalwart of Hanborough cricket for many years, has died of cancer at the age of 78.

A carpenter by trade, he was a stubborn opening batsman for Long Hanborough, which later became Hanborough CC, before moving to Witney Swifts.

He returned to play for his village side in the 1980s, teaming up with his brother, Dick, and son, Matthew, who both became key players for the club.

Indeed, they batted at one, two and three for Long Hanborough when they won the Airey Cup final in 1981.

The Oxford Mail cricket correspondent at the time, Ron Grimshaw, berated Hanborough for their shabby equipment on the day, especially their pads.

His article was said to hang from the smallest rooms in Hanborough households!

Gerald’s proudest achievement was representing the Oxfordshire Over 50s team run by Derek Primett when it was first formed.

He later became a regular supporter of the side and was present to see them play Gloucestershire at Great & Little Tew a fortnight ago.

He leaves a widow, Ann, and daughters Christine and Allison.

The funeral takes place at 2pm tomorrow at the Meth-odist Chapel in Long Hanborough.
