Hatti Archer insists she will be adopting a positive approach to this weekend’s Olympic Trials – despite not being 100 per cent fit.

The ex-Radley athlete, better known for her maiden name of Dean, looks set to line up in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at Birmingham.

But a nagging hip injury means that she knows that it will be a big ask to seal her place at London 2012, even though she is determined to do herself justice.

Archer, who now lives in Sheffield, only this week did some hurdles training to see how the injury held up, and knows that it is a case of getting through this weekend and then seeing what happens.

“I have had a little bit of a hip injury and would say I am at 90 per cent,” she said.

“I have only been able to do limited training, and was trying hurdling this week.

“The plan is to run, and if I do, I will be positive about things.

“I know that I am not going to be in absolutely top shape, but I have been in good enough shape this season and know that I have got time after the trials to get myself right – if everything goes to plan.”

The 30-year-old was this week named in the Great Britain team for the European Championships in Helsinki which begin next Wednesday, but will not be allowed to compete if she qualifies for London 2012.

Archer set three national records in the 3,000m steeplechase back in 2007, and although she missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a stress fracture to her ankle, she bounced back well and set a personal best in the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

It is now a question of whether she can recapture that sort of form ahead of what could be a massive weekend in her career.

And she remains upbeat that she will be able to rise to the occasion and book her place in TeamGB.

“I have got an A time from last year and am obviously hopeful of getting what I need this weekend,” she said.

“If I can do that, then I can concentrate on getting things right before the Games.”
