RADLEY’S ladies had to settle for second place in the Southern Counties Veterans Athletic Club (SCVAC) final at Ashford.

They put in a consistent performance, but finished 47 points behind champions Epsom & Ewell.

Jacqui Cherry won the vet 35 discus with a throw of 29.35m, while Jan Ellacott triumphed in the vet 50 100m, clocking 15.1secs.

Gwyneth Hueter took the vet 50 800m in 2mins 56.1secs, with Lyn Ahmet winning the vet 60 long jump in 3.24.

Abingdon Amblers finished a creditable sixth on their first appearance in the men’s final.

Les Newell proved their outstanding performer, winning the vet 35 A-string 800m in a personal best time of 1.59.0.

This was the 37-year-old’s first sub two-minute clocking for two laps of the track and came just ten days after setting his previous best of 2.01.76.

Newell also finished second in the 1,500m where he clocked 4.27.0.

Paul Fernandez won the B-string 800m and 1,500m in 2.11.0 and 4.35.5 respectively and ran 9.16.3 to triumph in the A-string 3,000m.

Abingdon’s other victory came from Ron Jones, who recorded 10.84m in the vet 60 shot put.
