FOOTBALL: Oxford City tame leaders as unbeaten run goes on

The Oxford Times: Tom Winters bagged City's crucial second goal Tom Winters bagged City's crucial second goal

OXFORD City extended their unbeaten run in Skrill North to five games with an impressive 2-0 victory over leaders AFC Telford at Marsh Lane last night.

The win increased their lead over relegation rivals Histon to four points with a game in hand, and with only two clubs going down this season, they also have a four-point advantage over second-from-bottom Stalybridge.

Although no classic, this was a key result for City who coped well with what little Telford had to offer.

Chances were few and far between in the first half, Declan Benjamin and Paul Stonehouse going close with City’s best two efforts.

Home keeper Mark Scott held an early second-half header from Dan Preston, and on 51 minutes, Telford were reduced to ten men when Kayden Jackson was brought down by Preston when clean through. Preston was given his marching orders.

City continued to hold the upper hand and went ahead on 57 minutes. A corner found Adam Learoyd at the far post and he made no mistake with a powerful header.

Viv Solomon-Otabor was off target with another effort, but he had a hand in the crucial second goal.

His cross found fellow substitute Tom Winters, whose first effort was saved by the keeper, but he made no mistake with the rebound to send City’s supporters home happy.

Oxford City: Scott, Henderson, Learoyd, Ballard, Willmott, Mullings, Benjamin, Pond, Jackson (Winters 75), O’Hanlon (Solomon-Otabor 60), Stonehouse.

Referee: A Degnarain.

Attendance: 312.
