Tom Digby, of Abingdon School, followed up his recent world record with a gold medal at the British Rowing Indoor Championships, writes John Wiggins.

The 17-year-old retained his Sixth Form Boys 2000m title at Lea Valley Velopark in 6mins 2 secs – a winning margin of six seconds.

While this remains outside the British record, his 5000m GB trial row of 15.54.9 earlier this month shaved 1.6 secs off the junior world record.

Tom’s younger brother, Edward was also in action for Pangbourne College, picking up gold in 11 500m event for year 11 as well as silver in the boys' team relay.

Other medals were won by City of Oxford RC’s Jamie Millington with silver in the year 10 event and bronze for Wallingford’s Charles Parry in the 65-69 age group.

Moulsford Prep School’s Cameron Wood was only six metres off winning the year 7 event but took a silver.

l The past week has seen all contenders for the 2016 Boat Races in action on the London Tideway.

First up were the two Oxford University women’s trial eights, this year named Scylla and Charybdis.

With only three returning Blues available, this is the only full course race experience for the bulk of the squad ahead of the Boat Race on Sunday, March 27.

With Blues, Lauren Kedar and 2015 president Anastasia Chitty in the stern, Scylla took an early lead which they held until the middle section of the race where the rough conditions better suited Charybdis.

With new president Maddy Badcott at stroke and former Oxford Brookes and GB U23 cox Morgan Bayhnham-Williams getting the better of her opposite number, Charybdis won by three lengths.

After the wind had caused the abandonment of Walton Small Boats Head on Saturday, it had abated by Sunday to allow the men’s men’s university trial eights went ahead without incident.

The Oxford boats, Business and Pleasure contained three returning Blues along with five Isis oarsmen and steered by former Osiris cox, Olivia Cleary.

The president Morgan Gerlak, one of few overseas oarsmen, rowed in Pleasure with old Abingdonian, Jamie Cook and they prevailed by half-a-length.
