MUSIC lovers are being invited to solve the "mystery of the organ" by attending two recitals at St Mary's Church, Banbury.

The recitals are on Sundays, March 11 and March 25, both starting at 3pm. Admission is by a charity donation.

The first recital will be by Cynthia Hall, organist at St Giles, Oxford, and the training officer for the Royal School of Church Music in Oxfordshire.

The event on March 25 will see Stephen Taylor, the former choirmaster and organist at St Mary's, return to the church for a one-hour session.

The mystery of the organ is because of conflicting descriptions.

A notice on the instrument says it was built by Snetzler and restored in 1935 by Hill, Norman and Beard.

But the church guidebook says the organ was built by Byfield, Wilcox, and Knight and bought for the old St Mary's in 1765.

Current St Mary's choirmaster Fred Riches said: "Since then it has been rebuilt, recased, enlarged, divided into two, put back together again, and installed in the north side of the chancel.

"There is no evidence that the instrument was built by Snetzler. It is a mystery we would like solved."
